Borough wide services to honour the war dead
THOSE who died serving their country will be honoured in Stockport.
Commemorative services and events will take place throughout the borough on Armistice Day (Saturday, November 11) and Remembrance Sunday, the following day.
They have been organised by the Royal British Legion and the council and there will be a two-minute silence on Armistice Day from 11am at Stockport War Memorial and Art Gallery.
Mayor of Stockport Linda Holt will attend and the beginning and end of the silence will be marked by maroon rockets being launched from the nearby civic complex.
Councillor Holt will also be at the same location on Remembrance Sunday for another two-minute silence from 11am.
It will begin with the Last Port and there will be wreath laying and prayers and reflection from Bishop of Stockport, the Right Reverend Libby Lane.
Coun Alex Ganotis, council leader, said: “This is a key opportunity to honour servicemen and women of this country and the Commonwealth who paid the ultimate price. I’d encourage Stockport residents to join us in remembering them.”
