Cooperative commemorating golden era
BARRING the 1990s, and the early years of the current millennium – most notably the two previous occasions that Jim Gannon was called on to manage County – recent decades for County supporters have very much been one long struggle to stay cheerful.
However, back in 1967, with the Fourth Division Championship Winners’ flag flying proudly over Edgeley Park, Vic Bernard’s Go Go Go County bandwagon was in full swing. Approaching the new season in Division Three, the Hatters were the talk of the town, and there was growing belief they could win a second-successive promotion.
Season ticket sales soared to record levels, Edgeley Park was given a facelift and Bernard outlined sensational plans to acquire its own train, The County Arrow, to transport the army of Cheadle Enders to away games.
The flamboyant chairman also introduced a new playing kit which, for the 1960s, was unique. The famous royal blue championship-winning shirts were replaced by a white shirt with blue chest band. The blue shorts remained, but the previous white side stripe and number changed from white to yellow. And the new white socks now had a yellow turnover at the top.
If that wasn’t enough, the club crest, at a time when very few clubs wore badges on their shirts, was proudly displayed right in the middle of the chest band.
