SHE makes cakes that look like they have been splattered with paint and others that are taller than some brides, now Kate Tynan has been named Wedding Cake Maker of the Year.

The 39-year-old, who runs Little Button Bakery out of her home in Marple, was given the north west title at the Wedding Industry Awards.

Kate only took up cake making professionally in 2013 having previously been a teacher and decided to concentrate solely on couple’s nuptials last year.

She said: “I decided wedding cakes were what I enjoyed making most, it lets me be more creative. I enjoy the bigger cakes and to be involved in a bride and groom’s special day is an honour.

“Wedding cakes have definitely got more creative, people experiment with colours and shapes and people sometimes want a big statement cake at their wedding, even if it isn’t all going to get eaten.

“I once did a 10 tier wedding cake that was 5ft 2in tall, some of the tiers were made out of polystyrene, calligraphy is popular and I’ve done one that looked like it had been splattered with paint.

“One of the most unusual was themed on the Golden Girls TV series. It’s an old show and the couple were in their 20s but they loved it and each tier represented a different character and had their face on.”

Kate, who lives with husband Ben, 40 and their children, three and six, on Stockport Road, gave up teaching when they were born.

She had always enjoyed baking as a youngster so took a cake decorating course.

When a friend asked her to make a wedding cake and it was a success she decided to take the plunge and go into business.

Each cake takes around three or four days to make and Kate usually does three a week. The average cost of a cake is between £450 to £650.

The awards ceremony took place at the Castlefield Rooms in Manchester.

Kate was named winner by three industry judges following the submission of a portfolio, feedback from customers and a question and answer session.

She said: “I was shocked and absolutely ecstatic. I was emotional as it felt like such an achievement, I’ve only been making solely wedding cakes for a year.

“A wedding is such an important day so to know someone has put their trust in me to create something that everyone will see is a privilege. I love seeing the cakes come to life.”

Kate will now take part in the national final in London early next year.
