Town hall lights up for campaign

ANYONE passing Stockport Town Hall after dark this week will notice it’s not its usual colour.

The landmark building on the A6 has been lit up in green to support the NSPCC’s Light up Christmas for Children campaign.

The campaign, which is being run in partnership with our sister paper the Manchester Evening News and Sky Cinema, highlights the scale and impact of child abuse and neglect.

It is also aimed at raising awareness of Childline and explaining why the NSPCC needs public support and donations to ensure the service can be there for every young person.

NSPCC’s community fundraising manager for Stockport, Deborah Sefton, said: “The holidays can be a lonely time for some children, but with your help, we can be there for all those children and young people who desperately need our help.

“Right now, we can only answer three out of four calls to Childline, but by donating just £4, you can help us get to the one in four.

“It is fabulous that the town hall will be lighting up green and I am sure it will be a real beacon for our fantastic fundraisers, the local Stockport branch who devote so much of their time and enthusiasm throughout the year to raise much needed funds.”

The green lights will remain in place until Wednesday, December 20.

Councillor Colin Foster, cabinet member for children and family services, said: “This Christmas a child will contact Childline every 25 seconds.

“They’ll talk about things like bullying, family problems, self-harm and depression problems they often feel they can’t talk to anyone else about.

“Being able to talk to Childline could be the moment that turns their life around. We are pleased to raise awareness of the NSPCC’s campaign and hope the generosity of the people of Stockport will help light up Christmas for children and give them a brighter future”.
