Bedding that is a real piece of history

ANEW home is needed for a historic and longforgotten antique bedspread that was handmade by children 100 years ago.

The bedspread is made up of panels embroidered by pupils at Stockport High School, on Greek Street, in 1917 that were then stitched together.

Each features the name of a youngster and some also include a message from the person who made it.

The heirloom is in the possession of Jenny Davis, who is originally from Offerton, and the names of her mum and aunt are on it.

She now lives in Norfolk but came back to Stockport last week for her 80th birthday party and is hoping to find a museum that can display the bedspread.

Her brother-in-law Peter Davis, 74, said: “The school is not there anymore but its name and the date are on the bedspread along with the different squares the pupils made.

“I think there are some names that would ring a bell with people. I don’t know how it has come to be in our family, that’s a bit of a mystery.

“But it is in quite good condition and should be back up where it belongs rather than in Norfolk. So we’d like a museum to get in touch where it can be put on public display.” name was Linney - celebrated her birthday with a party at the Alma Lodge, in Heaviley.

She brought the bedspread with her in the hope that a new home can be found for it.

Peter, who is originally from Woodsmoor but now lives in Altrincham, said: “It is very immediate to Stockport and relates to a lot of people who were educated here 100 years ago.

“Their relatives will still be around but might not be much longer and it is a piece of local history.

“It is lovely and it would be nice if someone could find room for it rather than for it to just be forgotten about.”
