BUSINESSES in a leafy area of Stockport have fallen victim to a spate of breakins that has stretched from before Christmas into the New Year.

Police have said burglary is up 40 per cent across the borough and one of the areas to fall victim is the Heatons.

Among those targeted was the Golden Gate takeaway, on Didsbury Road, Heaton Mersey, which was broken into between midnight and 10.45am on Sunday, January 7.

Just £10 was stolen but £100 of damage was caused.

In the early hours of the same day, Qico Beauty Parlour, on the same road, had its window smashed and a sink damaged in a break-in, but nothing was stolen.

And a gang was disturbed trying to get into That Hair Place, on Shaw Road, Heaton Moor, at 2.30am the previous day. Police described them as three men of medium build wearing dark clothes and balaclavas.

Restaurant Il Borgo, also on Shaw Road, had a door damaged in an attempted burglary overnight between Wednesday and Thursday, January 3 and 4.

A spokesman for GMP Stockport said: “There were more before Christmas and we are looking at them as part of a series. A lot of parts of Stockport are attractive to offenders but with these most didn’t get any further than an attempt.

“They were prevented by security measures at the businesses, which goes to show how important it is to have such things.”

Another burglary took place at the Bangkok Orchid Thai restaurant on London Road, Hazel Grove, on the afternoon of December 29.

A laptop valued at £200 and £300 worth of spirits were stolen.

Although police confirmed at the end of last year burglary was up 40 per cent compared to 12 months ago they said officers have also made some significant arrests in a crackdown.

A 49-year-old man has been charged in connection with the Il Borgo and Bangkok Orchid incidents and will appear at Stockport Magistrates’ Court later this month.

A second man has been arrested and bailed pending further enquiries.
