Nine decades in community
ACOMMUNITY group that has grown to hold political power in Stockport recently celebrated its 90th birthday.
The Heald Green Ratepayers Association began life back in 1927 to promote civic pride and improve the lives of residents.
It has organised events, campaigned on local issues and taken thousands of members on trips away over the years.
And although they have no specific political allegiance, members of the association have been repeatedly elected as Stockport councillors.
The nine decades of achievement were celebrated with an anniversary party at Heald Green Village Hall. There was a presentation, raffle, quizzes, music and refreshments.
Dave Mullin, deputy chairman of the group, said: “Putting this event together was fascinating, because we all learnt so much.
“There were the amazing trips throughout the 80s, when whole trains and, on one occasion, a quarter of an aeroplane were chartered especially for the residents, taking thousands to all sorts of places including London, Jersey and Belgium. There was sterling work to support the war effort and years of campaigning to improve life so close to the airport.
“People tend to stay a long time in Heald Green and we saw many old friends on the day, as well as youngsters keen to learn about how their grandparents and great-grandparents lived and worked.”
Of the current 15 members, three hold seats on Stockport Council.
The association has held council ward seats since first being elected in 1929.
A community magazine published three or four times a year by the group has also been keeping residents informed since 1962.
Old copies of the magazine could be viewed at the anniversary event.
Councillor Anna CharlesJones, also a member, said: “As well as celebrating the achievements of the past 90 years, this was a good opportunity to look at issues that matter to Heald Green residents today and to plan for the future.
“I was delighted to have met so many people and hear their views.
“Planning and the environment were key issues and many people also said how much they appreciated Heald Green’s village atmosphere, which we seek to preserve while embracing the future.”
