AMURDER inquiry has been launched after a woman walked into a police station and said she had killed her dad and buried him in the garden.

The woman called at Cheadle Heath Police Station on Sunday to make the confession - telling officers her father’s body had been concealed in the garden of her semi-detached home for several years. Greater Manchester Police have confirmed a 63-year-old woman is being held on suspicion of murder.

Forensic officers began a search of the garden on Matlock Road, Reddish, yesterday. As the Express went to press a body had not been found but enquiries were ongoing and the man’s family, who are being supported by specially trained officers, have been informed.

In a statement GMP said: “A 63-year-old woman has been arrested on suspicion of murder and remains in custody for questioning. Anyone with information is encouraged to come forward.”

Detective Inspector Dan Clegg, from GMP’s Major Incident Team, said: “Following the report, we’ve made a number of other enquiries and have, with help from specialist officers, begun searching in the garden.

“It’s still very early days in our investigation but I’d like to thank the public for their support in allowing us to carry out our enquiries, I’m sure this has been worrying for people in the local area.”

Neighbours on the road said they had seen police vans and cars coming and going since Sunday afternoon. It is understood 18 bins have been delivered to the property at the request of officers. Evidence tents have been set up at the back of the house.

It is also understood the woman in custody had been living on her own in the property. A neighbour said: “I would see her everyday, walking her dog.

“I cannot believe it. She is such a lovely person. I have known her for many, many years.

“She lived with her mum and dad and her mum died many, many years ago. I just assumed her dad died many years ago.

“She has a daughter but I have not seen her for a long time. She has been living there on her own for some time.

“I used to chat to her as I was walking down the road. I just cannot believe what I am hearing. She is a very quiet and reserved person.”

The horseshoe-shaped street is housing association-owned homes, although some residents have bought the properties.

Anyone with information should call police on 101 quoting reference number 1273 of 07/01/18 or independent charity Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
