EMMA CURRY
ABRAVE mum who suffered from postnatal depression has set up a fitness class to help other mothers battle the condition.
Lianne Beever, of Ridge Road, Marple, experienced severe anxiety after the birth of her daughter Elsie and found she was unable to leave the house.
She said: “My husband really tried to encourage me to get out and do things for myself - it was never that simple though really.
“I had such high anxiety about leaving Elsie and sometimes even just leaving the house felt like the hardest task.
“My doctor advised me to exercise, but it wasn’t until Elsie was older and I felt more comfortable leaving her that I was able to go to the gym and finally do something for me.”
Now the 34-year-old is launching One Fit Mama, offering classes for mums to take part in circuit classes set up around baby zones filled with toys to stimulate and entertain the children.
Modifications can be made for any issues relating to childbirth, such as pelvic floor problems.
Lianne, who is a teacher, said: There’s so much pressure on new mums to get their body back to how it was prebaby.
“Not only is that unrealistic, I also believe it’s this dangerous expectation that adds to making new mums feel inadequate.
“These mums have made and given birth to humans and their bodies are awesome.
“One Fit Mama is about celebrating our bodies, strengthening our bodies and improving our minds. It’s a chance to do something for you without the worry of leaving your baby.”
In each class, two spaces will be reserved for mums with postnatal depression, who have been referred by a health professional.
Theses women will be able to attend the classes free for six weeks.
Lianne added: “Hopefully I can help some mums who feel like I felt when Elsie was born and help them make time for themselves again.”
Classes will start on March 15 at Marple Senior Citizen Hall, from 10am to 10.45am and 11am to 11.45pm.
More dates and venues will be confirmed, email stockport@onefitmama. co.uk.
