RESIDENTS at a care home in Cheadle are preparing to take part in the RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch this weekend.

Residents at Care UK’s Abney Court in Abney Hall Park have got their binoculars at the ready and are gearing up to participate in the annual wildlife survey, which will take place from Saturday, January 27, to Monday, January 29.

The team have organised for members of Stockport RSPB to come to the home with specialist viewing equipment to count the birds, and there will be an organised walk in Abney Park so that local photographers can take photos of any birds spotted.

The RSPB Big Garden Birdwatch is the world’s biggest garden wildlife survey.

Every year, over half a million people nationwide take part by counting the birds, as well as other garden species such as badgers and hedgehogs, that they spot in their garden in one hour. This allows the RSPB to monitor species population and trends year to year.

Residents at Care UK homes across the country have been using the Birdwatch to take part in all sorts of bird-related activities, ranging from art projects to making bird food cakes.

Home manager Tracy Mitchell said: “Spending time outside and connecting with nature has great benefits for both physical and mental wellbeing, which is important for older people and particularly for those living with dementia.

“Birdwatching is a peaceful activity that has a calming effect on residents, with vibrant colours and distinctive bird songs also providing sensory stimulation.

“The residents enjoy getting together to count the wildlife in the home’s garden, so it is always a popular activity.”
