Colts in close contest
TERENCE MCGEEHAN AFTER another three-week layoff, the Junior Colts were in friendly action across the Pennines in Huddersfield against a host side who, in agreement, selected a mixed age side.
It was a very even contest and at times, especially in the first half, it was difficult to tell which side had the age advantage.
Moor came out of the blocks very fast, exerting lots of pressure on their opponents, some enterprising rugby, Joe Kilbride very influential.
And their reward came after 12 minutes when Evan Coffey drove over from close range to open up a five-point lead. Ten minutes later, under some pressure in their own 22’, Asa Bottomley brilliantly read an attempted pass and intercepted to run the length of the field and score a terrific try.
This seemed to galvanise the Yorkshire side though and they finished the half very strong, Joe Kilbride unfortunately blocked down on his own line, try awarded and converted to make score line 10-7.
Just before half time, Huddersfield finished off a good move, going over in the corner to give them a lead at the break, 12 points to 10.
The second half was an extremely tight affair, Moor lost hooker Jake Barrett to a shoulder injury but they still physically matched their older opponents. The game was primarily played in the middle sector in this half, both sides really battling hard in very heavy conditions.
But it was Huddersfield who got the only score of the half when the Moor lads started to tire a little, no doubt down to their recent lack of action.
But this tough encounter will have brought them on in preparation for the remainder of their Conference League which resumes next Sunday with a long trip to Staffordshire to take on Newcastle.
