Moment a nail bomb was set off outside flats
Homemade device had been packed with nuts and bolts
A HOMEMADE device which exploded outside a block of flats was a nail bomb, the Express can reveal.
Dramatic footage shows the moment of the blast in Stockport. CCTV at a nearby shop picked up the large explosion and is now part of a police investigation.
The fireball was captured on camera in the early hours of Monday.
Police were called to Stonemill Terrace, Penny Lane, shortly before 2.10am and cordoned off the area.
GMP has since confirmed that the device contained nuts and bolts.
A fire brigade source said: “It was a form of a homemade bolt bomb which hadn’t really worked. Nuts didn’t spread.
“A few were a small distance away but it had aerosols as the explosive. Obviously someone is trying to build something proper.”

The fireball created by the blast was captured on cameras around 300m from the scene in Lancashire Hill, near Stockport town centre, in the early hours of Monday morning.

“A few were a small distance away but it had aerosols as the explosive. But obviously someone is trying to build something proper.”
GMP said the incident, attended by a hazardous materials officer, was not terror-related.
A garage door was left damaged following the blast. It’s believed that although the device created a significant explosion it was crude and homemade.
A GMP spokesman said: “Police and the fire services attended and what is believed to be a homemade explosive device was found on the street.
“The device had partly exploded. An investigation has been launched and enquiries are ongoing.
“There was minor damage to a garage door, but luckily no one was injured during the incident.”
Officers took the CCTV footage from the Best One supermarket, which is at the junction of Penny Lane and Lancashire Hill, around 300m from the explosion.
Manager Sunny Ram said: “A staff member rang me and told me to get in early as the police had arrived and wanted the footage as my cameras cover the whole of Lancashire Hill.
“When they saw the footage the police were shocked. It’s not good having an explosion so close on Penny Lane but no one was injured, that’s the main thing.”
Miraculously there was only a small amount of damage caused, with just the garage door left dented and charred.
A fire crew from Whitehill station was sent to the scene following reports of a fire.
A fire brigade source said: “Crews turned up to a fire in a car park, and it turned out to be an improvised explosive device which had gone off.”
