APROGRAMME of work to improve roads across Stockport will see motorists on major routes delayed.

Carriageway resurfacing is taking place, meaning a mixture of road closures and temporary traffic lights.

The longest running project is in Cheadle Hulme, which started on Wednesday and is expected to run until March 17.

Contractors will be resurfacing Turves Road, Cheadle Road, Albert Road and Hulme Hall Road between the hours of 6.30pm and 5.30am.

There will be signed diversions for drivers as Cheadle Road and Hulme Hall Road will be closed and temporary two-way traffic lights will be used on Turves Road and Albert Road.

Cheadle Hulme South councillor Stuart Bodsworth says this is part of an eight-year programme where £100m is being invested to improve roads across the borough.

He said: “One thing people dislike most is poor road conditions as it affects their quality of life.

“If roads are a better standard it saves money as maintenance costs are lower. The work is being done on the basis of (road) usage and a condition survey.

“Turves Road is very busy, it is a no pain no gain situation.

“It will be a disturbance but it is being done overnight and if we don’t maintain the roads they will become unusable.”

Resurfacing is also being carried out on the A6 London Road, in Hazel Grove.

It began on Tuesday, February 20 and is expected to finish on Friday, weather permitting.

In the meantime between 8pm and 5am there will temporary road closures on Chester Road, Grundey Street and Chapel Street as well as two-way temporary lights on London Road itself.

A similar project on Lancashire Hill roundabout and Belmont Way, in Heaton Norris, finished on Thursday.

It had led to Belmont Way and Tiviot Way being closed between 8pm and 5am.

But a road closure in Woodley will remain in place while Solutions SK continue an emergency trial dig to establish the cause of flooding on Pennine Road, near the junction of Clough Meadow.

It has been extended until March 4 and a signed diversion via Hyde Road, George Lane, School Brow, Stockport Road, Sandy Lane, Greave and Werneth
