Seven Miles Out

- Rosemary Barratt

WELL February has flown by and it’s hard to believe that we are now in our penultimate month of events at Seven Miles Out.

Since we first got the keys to 20 Market Place in December 2013 we’ve had a truly amazing journey which has seen some dramatic changes to the area.

Back then, we were the only venue to run events in the Market Place and we are proud to have kick-started the evening economy which led to the opening of the refurbished Bakers Vaults and the substantial investment of Remedy Bar and Brewhouse into two empty units.

One of our proudest achievements has been being able to help local resident Martin Bain expand his comedy loving community of A Laugh In Stockport and attract even more lovely people to Stockport Old Town for boutique comedy nights with established names on the circuit.

For our last-but-one comedy night we are delighted to welcome Randolph Tempest, one of the country’s leading actor-types, and acclaimed by many (mostly himself ) as THE master thespian. He’s a writer, director, artist and poet – plays the bongos too. He’s hard to describe. He once reduced an audience to tears of laughter simply by sweeping the stage at a comedy gig – during the break.

Opening the show we have Kate McCabe. An American now resident in the UK, Kate cut her teeth on the NYC comedy scene and blends the observational with the ridiculous.

In the middle section we’ve got Chelsea Hart, who describes herself as “(Probably) the only operatic, bisexual, Alaskan comedian working in the UK, who is also famous in Bosnia.”

Although Neil Diamond has announced his retirement from touring, we’ll also be having a special guest appearance from Never Diamond, the world’s worst Neil Diamond tribute act! We can assure you this will be eventful.

Danny Sutcliffe is your delightful compère for the evening and will also be in charge of the pens.

Tickets are available online (£8) or you can buy a paper ticket in advance at Seven Miles Out for just £7. To make an online booking visit www.stockportcomedy. co.uk

On Friday evening we are very sad to announce that it’s our last Twang! in Seven Miles Out, hosted by those lovely people from Stockport Ukulele Players.

Twang! has been bringing local music lovers together every month for over two years and gives a much-needed platform to musicians of all ages. We’ve watched Open Mic performances from ukulele players under ten years old to over ninety and they all come together in a wonderful sociable and appreciative atmosphere. There have been some truly magical musical moments over the years.

The Stockport Ukulele Players have been with us throughout the whole of our journey playing in Seven Miles Out and at Foodie Friday on a regular basis and delivering the hugely popular workshops at the Stockport Old Town Fringe and Folk Festivals.

These guys always go the extra mile and we are truly grateful for their commitment and dedication supporting our venue and events. We’d like to say a special thank you to the following people for everything they’ve done for us; Mark, Sandra, Howard, Sharon, Paula, Martin, Sue, Geoff, Brian, Ross, Keith, Norman, John, Dr Uke, The Crukes and all the wonderful people at SUP. We are delighted that Stockport Ukulele Players will be performing at this month’s Foodie Friday on Good Friday so please come down and give them your support.

On Saturday, we celebrate our local scene with Saturday Sessions curated by the inspirational Niamey Catamaran who does so much great community work with local bands and musicians.

Again this is our penultimate event and we have a stellar line-up for March as follows: Steve – solo acoustic; Natty Sank and the Higher Vibrations – our favourite dub reggae band who will be launching their new album on the night; Jesus Medieval – Mexican reggae mixed in with lots of other styles and the muchloved Lalo Baby – Balkan folksy aka with high-octane exuberance. The Laszlo have been regular performers at Seven Miles Out since we started and the always bring the party when they play, so please join us for a positively joyous and uplifting experience which might find you dancing on the table to their pirate shanties.

It definitely feels like we are drawing close to the end of an era here at Seven Miles Out. We hope you can join us for the last leg of our incredible journey!
