Left flat by our postponement

-

WHAT to do on a Saturday when virtually the whole of British football is cancelled?

Clear the drive, clear the neighbour’s path, read the paper, an extra bacon butty (I deserved it), go for a bracing walk in the countryside – all done.

Apart from the cold and the snow it’s just like a normal Saturday in the summer!

The only positive is that both Brackley and Chorley did the decent thing and called the games off early enough to avoid the faithful taking time off work and from making unnecessary journeys.

But still it’s a deflating sight when you turn on the teletext and see row after row of “P” to signify the games falling by the wayside.

For us it just means more and more Tuesday evening games in what are already busy March and April.

Chorley, Kidderminster and, if we’re successful in the FA Trophy replay, Gainsborough and Leamington all need new dates, our run in is going to be interesting.

Of course by the time you read this we might have played that replay at Brackley which means all of the above is superfluous or it’s as is, and we’re still on the Wembley trail.

This week the TV pundits are all talking VAR. For me if a referee can’t make a decision then he shouldn’t be refing the game in the first place.

Of course when the weather’s bad the topic of a “winter break” always raises its ugly head.

The greedy league now want the first two weeks in February off, never mind that it’s the first Saturday in March when the bad weather has forced all the postponements or the fact that during the two-week rest all the Premier League teams will be jetting around the world to play each other in warmer climes.

On a much more serious note the death of Kieron Durkan saddens my heart.

Kieron played his part in County’s glory years, when we were on the up under Dave Jones.

His finest moment was probably missed by most as it was played in heavy fog at Mansfield and he had a huge role in our League cup run that caught the nations imagination in 96-97, his death saddens me the fact that he was only 44 just makes things worse, there are in fact far more important things in this world than football.
