Best County quiz of them all at the Top
I RATTLED on in last week’s column about the innate good sense of County Supporters in general and Supporters Cooperative members in particular, and this week I want to add generosity to the qualities I see present in our fan base.
County Supporters know how to enjoy themselves and, at the weekend, with spirits in need of reviving with the knowledge sinking in that a Tuesday night trip to face Brackley Town and `the Beast from the East’ at St James Park was on, the Supporters Cooperative held their popular `County Quiz’ at the Spinning Top.
More than three dozen made it for the appointed hour 5.30pm, as Quiz Master Supreme, former Coop Board member Nick Lee, took to the microphone.
Eight teams were attracted this time around with `Coop Elite’ morphing into `Four Just Men’ and previous wooden spoonists `Des and Marie’ showing up as `Rock Bottom.’
Lee’s easy wit and cool delivery made for an excellent evening.
After several rounds of questions (and drinks breaks) the pecking order was finally decided with `Four Just Men’ finishing first with 39 points.
Behind the winners were:2. `Four Go Mad on Mescaline’ 37 3. ` Star Men’ 36 4=. `Blind Faith’ & `Danny Dyers Chocolate Homunculus 35 6. Mascots 32 7. Unknown Warriors 29 8. Rock Bottom 21
As usual landlord Mike Swann laid on some hot food that went down a treat, before attentions were switched to the auction for three items, the first two donated by Mike were a County shirt signed by the current County team and a limited edition County Black & White Scarf- these raised£40 and £35 respectively, and a signed match ball from the Cooperative fetched £25, bringing the total raised to £100 in aid of Cancer Research UK.
At this point Mike took the stage to present the Supporters Cooperative with a second cheque covering the Spinning Top’s generous 10 per cent donation from takings on County match nights.
The cheque for £300 brought the season’s donations to the Guardian Account from the Spinning Top to £700, a magnificent gesture of support!
Put simply, this was quite the best `County Quiz’ this writer can recall – brilliant organisation and a fantastic atmosphere which was down in no small measure to organiser, and Coop Board Member Ed Keane, our Quiz Master Nick Lee who returned in triumph, and host Mike for his renowned hospitality and fine ales.
It was pleasing to note firstly how everyone present enjoyed the evening, and secondly how generous they were in supporting a very worthy cause.
This only carried on from the afternoon earlier when Supporters Cooperative members called in at the Cheadle End Cabin in numbers, donating a decent quantity of County shirts, shorts, t shirts, boots and scarves which were most welcome.
Just one appeal last week in the Stockport Express brought this fine response from County fans- thank you.
As always we will be in the cabin every County home game from 1.30 to 2.40.
