Rangers explore parliament

-

MEMBERS of the Girlguiding group, the Second Marple Rangers, made a trip to London for a visit to Parliament and Downing Street, hosted by MP William Wragg.

A group of six rangers took part in the trip in order to complete a challenge and earn their badge for UK Parliament Week.

William led the group on a tour of the Palace of Westminster, after which the rangers visited Number 10 Downing Street.

The visit coincided with the anniversary of 100 years since women were given the vote in Britain.

The girls had been learning about the women’s suffrage movement and during the visit they were able to see first hand the locations where some of the protest of the suffragettes took place.

These included the statues to which women chained themselves and the cupboard where Emily Davidson hid overnight in order to be recorded in Westminster in the 1911 Census.

William said: “I was very pleased to welcome the Second Marple Rangers to parliament to mark 100 years of women and the vote and I was impressed by the enthusiasm and knowledge they showed.

“Parliament is at the heart of our democracy in Britain and has been at the centre of many turning points in our history.

“I feel very privileged to be able to represent the people of Hazel Grove constituency here each week and I am always pleased to be able to share that experience with constituents who visit.”

Rangers leader Caroline Calverley said: “We haven’t stopped talking about the things we saw and William was so informative and made it really interesting for us.”
