World ranking for maths team
A TEAM of young mathematicians from Greenbank Preparatory School have been ranked 27th in the world in an online contest.
The group of Year 6 pupils from the school in Heathbank Road, Cheadle Hulme, took part in a worldwide online maths challenge on World Mathematics Day.
In the event, run by Mathsletics, they competed against four million students from 17,000 schools nationwide, covering 20 different aspects of the subject.
The Year 6 team took 27th place, while the Year 5 team came in 65th.
Adam Dyson, Greenbank’s assistant head academic, said: “It is a fantastic result achieved by the full class and not just our star performers.
“The secret to enabling your child to learn and enjoy maths is to take away the ‘fear factor.’
“Show them the subject is fun and that you can build on basic skills such as fractions and calculation until you can solve some really complex problems.”
Year 6 mathematician Shabbir Arsiwalla, aged 10, from Cheadle, who wants to be an architect, said: “I like maths because knowing the rules means eventually I’ll be able to design buildings or computers.”
Tiger Barlow, 10, from Bramhall, added: “I like maths because you learn something new every day, it’s not just adding, subtraction, division and multiplication but so much more.”
