Moor remain third after gritty victory

- SOUTH LANCS/ CHESHIRE 1 WIGAN HEATON MOOR DAVID TODD

try in injury time.

Fortune was to favour the visitors however, as from the restart following this score, Wigan were penalised and Chatterton elected to kick at goal, landing a huge 35-metre effort, edging Moor back into the lead 10-7 at half-time. As it turned out, this proved to be the decisive score.

The second half followed an almost identical pattern as the first, as both sides effectively cancelled each other out.

Early on, Moor did have a chance to go further ahead when awarded another penalty well within Chatterton’s range, but inexplicably chose to kick for touch and the resultant lineout was squandered.

It wasn’t until the last quarter that a similar chance again presented itself and this time Chatterton kicked the points to extend their lead, but the advantage did not last for long, as Wigan were successful with their own penalty kick shortly afterwards.

For the last few minutes of the game it was the home side who dominated, during which they had a chance of drawing level with another penalty kick, but fortunately for Moor, this drifted wide.

Despite this setback, Wigan continued to press, setting up a nailbiting finish for Moor supporters which extended to some seven minutes of injury time, but dogged defence by the visitors preserved their lead and the final whistle found a very relieved Moor side as they held on to win 13-10.

This was a hardfought, well-executed performance by everyone involved in the Moor team, which maintained their third place in the division.

Moor entertain second-placed Liverpool Collegiate at Green Lane next Saturday, kick off 3pm. the result of which could have a major bearing on who finishes runner-up in the division this season.
