Millers off to flyer in the league

NEW Mills were the fast starters in the Stockport and District league last Tuesday evening.

The Millers took six winners and the aggregate away from Handforth hammering The Waggon and Horses.

Richard Peach 21-7 and Richard Briddon 21-9 secured the aggregate for the men from the hills.

This result was despite “The Legend” Noel Burrows coasting to a 21-4 success for The Waggon.

In Hyde there was a brilliant start for George and Dragon as they defeated Woodley Sports 11-3. The visitors did have some comfort though wuth winning debuts for both Willie Owen and Billy Smythe.

The talking team of winter The Grapes are expected to mount a serious challenge to Houldswort­h WMC.

On the opening night it was a solid start with eight winners and the aggregate against Hadfield.

Stalwarts Mike Gee 21-6 and Dave Walker 21-7 led by example to get the ball rolling for the men from Hyde. Champions Houldswort­h also started with a resounding win 11-3 over much fancied Victoria at Leamington Road.

The Vic have added to there squad and are quietly fancied to be up near the top of the table. Terry Gales men showed them no mercy though with Tommy “Tombo” Jonhstone galloping over the line with a 21-5 winning card.

It’s going to be an interestin­g season for Great Moor having two teams in the top flight.

The first team secured a superb five and the aggregate result up at Whaley Bridge. Geoff Shaw 21-9 and Johnny Chapman 21-9 ensured all the points headed back down the A6 this time.

Great Moor second team fell by the wayside however comprehens­ively beaten by a much changed Poynton Sports.

In B Division the big starters were Poynton Sports (2) as they whitewashe­d Navigation for a 13-0 home result.

Many of the local leagues are now starting to get going after the busy easter bowling period.
