APILOT who got to the final of TV show MasterChef has set himself another challenge use his skills to make the airline industry’s in-flight meals edible.

David Crichton, 40, from Bramhall, got to the final three of the BBC show before being edged out by winner Kenny Tutt on Friday

Despite not coming out on top David has loved his time in the kitchen and described Thursday’s first final show as the ‘best episode ever.’

Away from the TV screen he flies for Thomas Cook and says that although his company’s plane food is decent other airlines really need work.

David said: “I can’t believe how bad aeroplane food is, it’s all about cutting costs. I’d like to do something about that within the industry.

“My dream would be to go part time as it is not about making money but doing things I want to do.

“I just love taking basic ingredients and turning them into something. In the show I’ve always chosen cheap ingredients and tried to turn them into the best I can.

“In terms of drama Thursday’s show was probably the best episode of MasterChef ever.”

David, who is married to Zahra, had a diet of ham sandwiches, chicken Kievs and chips as a teenager.

That was until his parents went on a two-week holiday, leaving him with a full freezer and he discovered he loved food.

Since then he has taught himself to cook and refined his skills through his 20s and 30s with modern European food.

Among the creations that saw him make the final three from the original 56 was a George Michael dessert made with chocolate bars and caramel called Careless Wispa.

David said: “I have always wanted to have a go at MasterChef, it is my favourite show and I’ve watched it for 14 years.

“The key is learning quickly what the judges like and don’t like.

“It never entered my thinking that I might win it or even get as far as I did, I’m not the most competitive person in the world.

“But it can change people’s lives and the further you go the further you want to get.”
