Stockport sign off with victory

- NORTH 1 WEST

the head in the Stockport 22 and their No 6 picked and ran in for the try to make it 7-7.

Burnage fumbled the kick off and Stockport pressure resulted in a 5m scrum to the home side.

A penalty was quickly taken and again it was Sackville-West who had the pace and power to get over the line, McGovern on target with the kick for 14-7.

In the last five minutes of the half Sackville-West got his third try after Stockport moved the ball right then left and he took the recycled ball to crash over for a try converted by McGovern.

But Burnage still in the game and got an easy try just before the break when their No 8 went blind from a scrum on the Stockport 22 to make it 21-14 at half time.

Stockport started the second period well but Burnage drove a scrum in their 22 about 15 metres and the ball was then moved quickly to their centre on the right. His 50 metre run looked to have secured a try but an excellent covering tackle by Stockport fullback Rhodri Mayer caused the centre to knock on over the line.

Burnage won a penalty at the ensuing scrum and their tap set up the centre to score out on the right, there was no conversion but the visitors were right in the game at 21-19.

Burnage ran the ball from the kick off and their pace and support running gave them another unconverted try to take the lead 21-24.

Stockport defended well as Burnage put on more pressure and then had a good attack of their own, going through many phases from half way to win a penalty in front of the Burnage posts. No 7 Simon Green tapped and ran in unopposed and McGovern added the conversion to put Stockport back in the lead.

A good break by Tom Eaton set up a scoring pass to Green but the Burnage centre deliberately knocked on and got a yellow card.

McGovern converted the penalty for 31-24.

Despite being a man short Burnage ran the ball from their own 22 and their wing got a try under the Stockport posts to draw the scores level with eight minutes to go.

Stockport missed a penalty after Burnage were reduced to 13 for a red card offence but Liam McGovern’s jinking run from the Burnage 22 gave him the try and conversion that sealed the win at 38-31.

This bonus point victory puts Stockport sixth, just above Burnage and four points below Blackburn, opponents for the final game of the season next week.
