Chorley draw sees play-offs secured

- VANARAMA NATIONAL LEAGUE NORTH CHORLEY .......................... 1 COUNTY ............................ 1 GARETH EVANS

THE Hatters’ trip to Chorley a week ago yesterday was historically notable for producing their firstever draw there against the ‘Magpies’.

But of more contemporary importance was the headed equaliser 19 minutes from time by left-back Scott Duxbury that, together with results elsewhere, guaranteed County a place in the

National League North play-offs.

Sixth-placed Chorley, just one position below County, also had serious play-off aspirations.

And, with 27 minutes played, the hosts went ahead with their first attempt of the evening.

Adam Blakeman’s free-kick picked out Scott Leather, who found space within a crowded box to turn and unleash his well-struck drive into the bottomleft corner.

The Hatters were nonetheless playing their part in an open contest - and particularly after the break, striking the far post around the hour-mark with a corner by Adam Thomas.

This effort was worthy of a goal - and it came courtesy of Duxbury, who, from 15 yards, connected with Dan Cowan’s cross from the right to loop a header into the top-right of the net.

Provided the Hatters now remained back on level terms, they could not be overtaken to a play-off slot by either Blyth Spartans or York City both of whom were losing on the night.

And in the event, happily, matters everywhere were to remain unchanged although County had goalkeeper Ben Hinchliffe and his fellow defenders to thank for performing with collective vigour in the face of concerted Chorley pressure late on.
