Mum’s autism guide
A HEALD Green mum has written a guide to the challenges experienced by parents of autistic children.
Debby Elley is the author of 15 Things They Forgot To Tell You About Autism – The Stuff that Transformed My Life as an Autism Parent, an account of overcoming daily parenting hurdles which was published on April 19.
Each challenge is illustrated with anecdotes from home life, coupled with strategies that 47-year-old Debby found to be the most effective.
A mother of 14-year-old twin boys who are both on the autism spectrum, Debby made it her mission to help other parents of children with autism.
She is the co-founder and co-editor of Stockportbased AuKids magazine, an award-winning social enterprise sold nationally.
Debby said: “As an autism parent, there’s nothing to match that ‘oh, that happens to me’ feeling.
“Autism parenting is a club like no other, with rewards and challenges like no others.
“Going it alone shouldn’t be an option when there’s a world of people out there in the same boat.
“Looking back, there were plenty of things about autism that were explained badly to me, or not at all.
“I wanted to put that right with this book and give other parents the information that most made a difference to me.”
