Speedy start to Harriers season

STOCKPORT Harriers had a blazing first Youth Developmen­t League match of the season at Sheffield on 21 April 2018.

This was the first match since earning promotion to Premier Division 2 after an unbeaten Division 1 Campaign in 2017. Stockport’s Under 13 and Under 15 Squad took victory with a score of 490 points; a convincing margin ahead of second-placed Middlesbro­ugh and well ahead of some of the UK’s biggest Clubs including Liverpool Harriers and Gateshead Harriers.

In the Under 13 Girls, there were PB’s all-round in the Sprints with Millie Everett winning the 75m ‘A’ Race in 10.81 before running another PB of 21.68 for third in the 150m.

Seren Redfern ran 10.78 for third in the 75m ‘B’ race and 21.52 for a second PB and third in the 150m. Darcy Breen led from gun to tape in the 800m to win in 2:28 with team-mate Saffron Meade taking second in the ‘B’ race in a lifetime best of 2:41 on her Youth Developmen­t League Squad debut.

In the 1200m there was a brilliant run from Freya Murdoch to win the ‘A’ race in a big PB of 3:56.74 while Sophie Ellwood ran 4:16.46 for second in the ‘B’ race, with both Freya and Sophie competing in the YDL for the first time.

Stockport cleansweep­ed the hurdles with Emma Wood Doyle and Lola Unsworth winning their respective races and a team of Holly Stewart, Lola Unsworth, Millie Everett and Seren Redfern were just shy of the Club Record with 56.88 to take second spot in the 4x100m Relay.

In the Long Jump there was a win for Lola Unsworth with 4.40m, a big personal best and ranking her second in the UK in her school year.

Emma Wood Doyle won the ‘B’ Competitio­n with 3.79m before winning the High Jump ‘B’ event with 1.35 and behind teammate Darcy Breen who won with a Jump of 1.38m.

Holly Stewart finished third in the shot with 6.53m while Lola Unsworth was close behind with 6.35m to win the ‘B’ event. Holly won the javelin with a best throw of 21.60 and Daniela Graham-Marti won the ‘B’ event with 19.09m.

Next up were the Under 13 Boys with Samesh Sivabalan finishing third in the ‘A’ races of both the 100m and 200m with Archie Hoyle 5th in the 100m and Harry Ahearn 6th in the 200m.

Arthur Kennedy finished 6th in the 800m ‘A’ race and Archie Hoyle 4th in the ‘B’ race; this being his first race of the year. In the 1500m, a time of 5:12.97 saw Harry Ahearn finish 5th in the ‘A’ race while Harvey Murphy’s 5:30 was good enough for third in the ‘B’ race.

The boys matched the girls in clean sweeping the hurdles with a PB of 13.56 winning the ‘A’ race for Arthur Kennedy while James Cotton won the ‘B’ race in 15.91.

This was James’ first ever hurdles race and first competitio­n for the Club. James, Arthur, Harry and Samesh also got the baton around smoothly to take third in the 4x100m relay.

A strong 4.19m Jump saw Arthur Kennedy finish second in the Long Jump and Rhys Watson’s 3.70 was third in the ‘B’ event.

Harvey Murphy jumped a very creditable 1.31m in the High Jump and finished second, Daniel McCann finishing third in the ‘B’ competitio­n with 1.10m.

Throws of 5.09m and 4.93m put Kieran Dempsey and Harry Ahearn 4th and 3rd respective­ly in the ‘A’ and ‘B’ Shot Put competitio­ns and there were good results in the javelin where 17.56m from Daniel McCann took second and Harvey won the ‘B’ event in 16.28m.

In the Under 15 Girls, Becky Roach and Annabelle Mobley finished 6th and 4th in the 100m ‘A’ and ‘B’ races, while in the 200m Daisy Keigher ran 27.87 for 6th in the ‘A’ and Annabel Mobley 27.99 for 4th in the ‘B’ race.

Amy Battle won the 300m, finishing strongly with 42.57, and Becky Roach continued a busy day with 47.38 for third in the ‘B’ race.

There was a five second PB for Rebecca Cox, running 2:32 for fifth in the 800m ‘A’ race with teammate Ella Taylor third in the ‘B’ race.

Josie Driver was our sole representa­tive in the 1500m and ran 5:31.51 for 3rd. Amy Battle finished second behind the Northern Champion in the Hurdles and Lucy Robinson won the ‘B’ race.

There was some smooth exchanges between the 4x100m squad of Ella Chambers, Becky Roach, Becca Leather and Annabelle Mobley as they finished 4th, while a 4x300m team of Amy Battle, Becca Cox, Ella Taylor and Lucy Robinson ran 3:06.21 for third.

Stockport dominated the Jumps with Lucy Robinson (5.09m) and Daisy Keigher (4.90m) winning the ‘A’ and ‘B’ Long Jumps while Lucy also won the High Jump in 1.51m, Rebecca Cox winning the ‘B’ competitio­n with a PB of 1.48m and eclipsing her previous best that has stood for over a year. 10.02m took second in the shot for Amy Battle and Melissa Cox matched her position with 7.45m in the ‘B’ event.

Rosie Lasseter (23.66m) and Becca Leather (14.02m) also finished second in the ‘A’ and ‘B’ Discus competitio­ns before matching these positions in the Hammer with throws of 30.42m and 17.38m respective­ly.

Rosie finished second in the Javelin with 20.08 and Melissa Cox took full points with a 12.25m throw in the ‘B’ competitio­n.

And finally, the Under 15 Boys had their turn in the spotlight with Adam Pennington running 13.15 and 26.41 for the 100m and 200m finishing 5th and 6th respective­ly with Sam Ayre 6th in the 200m ‘B’ race in 29.04.

A time of 42.86 saw Jack Doodson finish 5th in the 300m ‘A’ race while 43.41 saw Tom Manton finish second in the B.

Tom Manton and Henry Pickard finished 4th and 2nd in the 800m ‘A’ and ‘B’ races (times not available) and in the 1500m Harry Elwood’s 4:43.77 PB took second while a 4:48.69 from Jack Catterall won the ‘B’ race. Jonah Wall ran a 14.86 80m Hurdles for 5th place and Sam Ayre was 4th in the ‘B’ race.

In the relays a team of Tom Manton, Jack Doodson, Sam Ayre and Adam Pennington ran 53.16 for 6th in the 4x100m and a team of Adam Pennington, Jonah Wall, Louis Briscall-Slack and Tom Manton ran 2:59.91 for 4th in a competitiv­e 4x300m race.

A leap of 5.16m for Jack Doodson in the Long Jump took first place and Sam Ayre’s 4.38m took 4th in the ‘B’ contest.

Jack jumped 1.50m for fifth in the High Jump and Jonah Wall’s 1.35m took third from the ‘B’ string jumpers.

In the Throws, Cameron Unsworth had a productive day with 8.80m for third in the Shot, 25.08m for second in the hammer and 30.35m for third in the Javelin.

Louis Briscall-Slack threw 7.50m for third in the ‘B’ Shot and 27.31m to win the’ ‘B Javelin event. Bow Hornby finished in second place in the discus with a best throw of 21.93m and Jonah Wall won the ‘B’ event with 19.35m.

Bow also took second spot in the ‘B’ competitio­n in the Hammer where his best throw of 15.46m rounded off a successful set of results.

Match 2 will take place on 19 May 2018 in Liverpool.
