Gatley glee for team of Leprechaun­s

GATLEY Golf Club held their Annual St Patrick’s Day Open 9 Hole Scramble and the popular event had teams from Shrewsbury, Rochdale and local South Manchester Golf Clubs competing along with members.

The weather was kind, due to a bit of Irish Luck and Diki Davies the Steward and Andrea Lynton, the Banqueting Coordinato­r, provided the players with a tot of Jameson’s and Baileys before play.

The winning team ‘Sale Leprechaun­s’ comprised of Graham and Linda Jenkinson, Bernard and Mary Walmsley who narrowly pipped the Shrewsbury Shamrocks (Roisin and John Andrew, Tom and Maggie Lee)

In the evening the festivitie­s continued into the early hours with Irish Dancing provided by Eithne Entwhistle and music from traditiona­l Irish Band Ragaire and the Guinness washed down the beef, bacon ribs and cabbage.

Phil Rodman was too hot to handle in a singles Stableford at Gatley posting a huge 45 points to romp home from Matthew Milnes 41 and Chris Coffey 39.

Christine Bartlett breezed to victory in a singles Stableford for Mellor and Townscliff­e ladies posting 37 points to finish ahead of Carys Baggs 34 and Romney Barnes and Pat Daniels, both 32.

M and T’s men were also in singles Stableford mode and in division one Matthew Moores was top man with 40 points, one more than Andrew Adderley, Andy Greasley and John Heginbotha­m.

In division two Thomas Challinor posted an impressive 44 points to finish ahead of Jake Senogles 43 and Neville Sharlis 41.

Romiley’s men enjoyed two competitio­ns and in a singles Stableford Phil Roberts led in with 38 points, one more than Nick Collins and Geoff Dixon.

The first round of the Handicap Cup was won by Barry Logan with 70 and hot on his heels with 71 were Brook Snape and Steve Shiels.

Romiley ladies played a singles Stableford and Heather Denton was out on her own with 33 points from Janet Godfrey and Carolyn Brinsley.

In the accompanyi­ng ladies Back-Nine Stableford Barbara Leith was first past the post with 14 points, three more than Sandra Hayes and Marcia Conway.

Avro’s men played for the Greenkeepe­r’s Trophy and it was won in style by Lee Williams with 39 points from Bryan Neil 35 and Derek Bell and Peter Roles, both 31.

Cheadle ladies played a 9-hole Stableford and after a cpo on 16 points Vibhu Barchha was top of the shop from Beverley Patino.

There was some hot competitio­n for Disley’s men in a BB Stableford for the Services Trophy with J Hatton and N Curry winning a cpo on 48 points from J Robinson and M Will, one more than M Robinson and P Will.

It was even closer for Disley ladies in a singles Stableford with three players locked on 32 points with Debbie Eyre winning the cpo from Jean Blackie and Anne Booth.

Heaton Moor’s new Captain Roy Cooke showed his enduring sporting class he won a cpo on 39 points from Martin Thorley, three more than Ian Thomas in a singles Stableford.
