Bramley clinches Classic

- BOWLS JAMIE BRAMLEY

THE Woodley Sports Classic final day took place on Sunday with three Stockport hopefuls in contention.

The event in its 30th year anniversary had seen no player from the town secure the title during its history.

The draw paired Tommy Johnstone (Poynton) with Jamie Bramley (Reddish) which just went Bramley’s way 21-19.

Victoria man John Davies was hugely fancied but he fell by the wayside in round one to an on song Mark Sutton 21-16.

In the top half of the draw the crowd were mezmorized by show man Callum Wraight who blitzed through 21-10 and then 21-16 against up and coming Ryan Walters.

In the bottom half of the draw Jamie Bramley set up a semi final clash with Cumbrian friend Billy Thornton by seeing off Mark Sutton 21-14.

The unbelievable Wraight was now odds on with the bookies and left Liverpools George Curran well beaten. The local hope Bramley was always a few chalks ahead of Thornton and secured his final berth 21-16.

The final had everything with Bramley leading 2-0 having had several very good leads destroyed by Wraight’s accurate and powerful striking.

The Stockport hopes were raised as the man with green bowls opened up a 17-11 gap on Wraight. The big character from Shrewsbury came roaring back though and squared the game at 20-20. With Bramley lay on Wraight struck again leaving the Stockport man with an 18 inch bowl to beat to clinch the title.

To his delight Bramley played the perfect bowl to take home the classic and the winners cheque.

Miserable weather took its toll on the local games in the S N D league this week. Credit goes to Great Moor for getting there match played at home to Waggon and Horses.

It’s been a fantastic start for the men from Store Street and another victory followed with 7 and the aggregate secured.

Guy Starkie was at it again winning 21-9 along with ex-Hazel Grove stalwart Keith Tonge who also bolted in to the same score.

The legend that is Noel Burrows was in stunning form as he blitzed over the line 21-2 for the team from Handforth.
