THE mayor of Stockport was given a computing lesson by Greenbank Preparatory School pupils as she opened their new media suite.

Linda Holt, a former bank worker, spent 33 years totting up her facts and figures ‘at first just in my head’.

She said: “My generation didn’t have anything like this, but now there’s nothing the kids can’t do.

“It’s wonderful how modern technology facilitates the speed and breadth of learning and how easily the young mind embraces the new challenges.”

Parents at Greenbank Prep raised £15,000 to revamp the Orsborn Media Suite, named after Carl and Linda Orsborn, who founded the independent primary school in 1951 with the mission of modernising methods.

Headteacher Janet Lowe said: “The new suite is equipped with the latest laptops and will allow us to develop our teaching and learning across the curriculum and run a series of animation, web design and micro-bits clubs lunchtimes.

“We have also renewed our library to combine the very best of classical and contemporary schooling, maintain our exceptional standards of literacy and run our Wake-up and Read and Wake-up and Listen clubs before school.”

Greenbank’s chair of trustees Phil Enstone added: “Computing is an absolutely essential life skill and the parents tell us how much they love seeing their children come home and show them just what they can do on all the new computing packages they have learnt.”

School captain Kaspar Berezai said: “My dad is still in charge of setting up the computers at home, but I am helping more and more.”
