Kitten seeing stars after unusual snack

-

A PLASTIC decorative star was discovered alongside several lengths of cotton and had to be surgically removed from an eightmonth-old kitten’s stomach.

Young Zelda’s painful ordeal has sparked a warning from Stockport vets urging cat owners to ‘pet proof’ their homes.

The cat was taken to Woodcroft Veterinary Surgery in Cheadle by her owner Lorraine Ahmed after she became lethargic and stopped eating.

Zelda underwent numerous tests to find out what was wrong, but it was an X-ray that revealed what was making her ill.

The plastic star had become lodged in her stomach, leaving her in a lot of pain.

Woodcroft Vets says it’s unusual for cats to eat things they shouldn’t, but said its a key example of how owners can never be too careful.

Vet Natalie Miles, who treated the kitten, is now urging people to ‘pet proof’ their homes by keeping small objects out of reach.

She said: “Zelda was very lethargic and displaying signs of discomfort and stomach pain.

“We x-rayed her stomach and abdomen and found several abnormal objects. Our main concern was that these objects could cause obstruction and internal damage. Zelda is now back home with her family and has made a full recovery.

“My advice to all pet owners would be to make sure all foods are kept locked away and small, loose objects kept out of reach.”

Lorraine, who lives in Offerton, said Zelda is now back to her mischievous self.

She added: “Zelda had not been herself that day and we knew something was wrong. We took her to Woodcroft vets where she was treated and we can’t thank the team enough for all their help.”
