AWOMAN who works on clinical trials to find new cancer treatments took part in this year’s Great Manchester Run in memory of her dad.

Emma Darlington, 25, from Reddish, works for the Christie and also took part to raise money for the hospital alongside 69 of her colleagues.

It was the second time she has completed the course, having signed up in 2015 to support her dad who was having treatment at the Christie.

But he sadly died shortly before the event, although Emma still took part.

She said: “Last time, my Dad passed away a few weeks before the run so I wasn’t in the best frame of mind to enjoy the experience.

“But because people had been so generous with their donations on my Dad’s behalf, I felt I couldn’t not run.

“This year I decided to run again to support the Christie to be able to raise some more money to put towards patient care.

“I know first-hand how important the hospital and the funds raised by the charity are and I loved being able to do this in my Dad’s memory again with a little less sadness this time.”

The 70 members of staff from the Christie are running as part of a series of celebrations to mark 70 years of the NHS.

Lou Stimson, from the Christie, said: “We couldn’t allow the 70th anniversary of the NHS to pass without marking it in a special way so we appealed for our staff to don their running shoes and work together.

“It was a real mix of serious runners and people who want to challenge themselves and it has been great to see the team come together.

“It was quite a sight to have our sea of blue t-shirts at the start line to kick off our celebrations.”
