Use of Spice on our streets out of control

- BY JONATHAN BILLINGS Chief Executive Officer at The Wellspring

WE are deeply concerned at The Wellspring with the rising problems the town is facing with the drug Spice.

Recently we have had contact with lots of people using Spice who have told us that very strong batches of the drug are available on our streets.

When someone overdoses on Spice we mainly experience two kinds of symptoms.

People can fall in to a zombie like trance or they can collapse unconscious.

These episodes tend to last for around 15 minutes. However recently we have witnessed people overdosing then coming around after 15 minutes but then 20 minutes later they have had a secondary episode without using the drug again.

This secondary episode was very violent. The potential repercussions of this could be very harmful and many people could be potentially put at serious risk.

The drug Spice has been evolving for a number of years. It is now at its most dangerous that I have ever seen. It has such a detrimental effect on so many people. Its use is getting out of all control. It becomes even more concerning as new symptoms are experienced.

The effects of long-term use are completely unknown.

The Wellspring has on site Drug and Alcohol workers who can give advice and support as well as make referrals to other professional drug and alcohol services, including detox and rehab. Please get in touch if you would like any further information or support concerning a drug or alcohol issue.
