Two in Queen’s Birthday Honours
A WOMAN who has spent more than 40 years in nursing has been rewarded in the Queen’s Birthday Honours.
Debbie Smith, 59, from Hazel Grove has been given a British Empire Medal (BEM) for services to nursing.
She currently works at the Macmillan Cancer information and Support Centre at Wythenshawe Hospital.
But the married mum-of-three has also worked at Stepping Hill as a ward sister and began her career in 1976. She was nominated by former colleague Jane Down, who spent five years compiling a file of supporting evidence such as thank you letters from patients.
Debbie, who also has three grandchildren, said: “I can’t believe she did that, I was astonished. It really is such an honour but you are only as good as your team in nursing, that has always been the way.
“When I first got the letter telling me I thought it was my son playing a joke.”
Victoria Rockingham, also from Stockport, was made an MBE in the honours list for services to the environment and volunteering.
