Driver mowed down clubber after row

- ANDREW BARDSLEY

A CLUBBER saw the ‘red mist’ and deliberately mowed down another man in his car after a dance floor argument, a court heard.

Roman Dibden, of Grizedale Road, Stockport, hit the man with his Seat Ibiza outside FAC 251 in Manchester city centre after drinking vodka and Red Bull, a court heard.

A judge ruled that Dibden deliberately knocked him down after leaving the nightclub in the early hours, despite the defendant claiming it was an accident.

Dibden, 21, avoided jail for the attack and was sentenced to 12 months, suspended for two years. Manchester Crown Court heard Dibden had no previous convictions and had shown remorse.

Sentencing, Judge Elizabeth Nicholls said: “You did nothing to avoid him.

“I am satisfied that this was a deliberate act. However I’m sure it was a spur of the moment act. It was a red mist moment.”

ACLUBBER saw the ‘red mist’ and deliberately mowed down another man in his car after a dance floor argument, a court heard.

Manchester Crown Court heard that Dibden was out with a friend on July 25 last year.

He had drunk one vodka and Red Bull before the row, it was said.

Prosecuting, Charlotte Crangle told the court the victim accidentally bumped into Dibden, after another clubber had knocked into him. He said Dibden pushed him back and then a ‘scuffle’ broke out, which was quickly stopped by bouncers.

The defendant denied this account and said after buying a drink he had been punched and his earring was ripped out, causing bleeding. Dibden said his friend was also being assaulted by others. Both Dibden and the other man were thrown out of the club.

The court heard how, after they were both ejected, Dibden went to a car park on Charles Street, where he had parked his black Seat Ibiza earlier. The other man remained outside the club, saying he was waiting for his friends to leave.

CCTV footage played in court showed Dibden’s car parking outside the club.

Prosecutors alleged Dibden’s friend was pointing out the man who he had earlier been in a confrontation with.

Dibden, who gave evidence at his sentencing hearing, denied this and said he was trying to get his friend away from trouble and to leave the area in his car. Dibden was then seen to reverse at speed in an act of ‘bravado.’

After his friend got in the car, Dibden then ploughed into the man he had the altercation with. He had been standing in the road, a few feet from the kerb.

The court heard there were ‘gasps’ from onlookers and the shocking footage showed some with their hands over their mouths.

The car did not stop following the collision and people rushed to help.

The victim said he needed 13 stitches after receiving a cut to the back of his head.

Defending, John Marsh said Dibden had hit the man by accident and claimed he didn’t aim the car at him.

Sentencing, Judge Elizabeth Nicholls said: “You did nothing to avoid him.

“I am satisfied that this was a deliberate act. However I’m sure it was a spur of the moment act. It was a red mist moment.”

Dibden pleaded guilty to one count of causing serious injury by dangerous driving. He must complete 150 hours of unpaid work, observe a curfew for a month from 10pm to 6.30am and he was banned from driving for two years and must take an extended re-test.
