POLICE investigating a fatal hit-andrun have arrested a man. The man, aged 28, has been held on suspicion of causing death by dangerous driving and failing to stop at the scene of an accident.
The arrest follows the death of a 24-year-old woman who was killed at a pedestrian crossing on Chester Road in Cornbrook on Thursday night when she was hit by a silver Ford Mondeo.
It was later found by police parked up in the North Reddish area of Stockport.
After the incident police appealed directly to the driver to hand himself in.
Sgt Danny Byrne of GMP’s Serious Collision Investigation Unit said: “Enquiries have been ongoing throughout the day to trace the car and find the driver.
“We found a car matching the description we had been given and have now confirmed it was the car that was involved in the collision.
“My thoughts continue to be with the woman’s family, I can’t imagine what her loved ones are going through.
“I want to be in a position to answer all of their questions and I can only do that with help from those who know what happened.
“I would also like to renew my appeal to anyone who witnessed the collision to come forward or for anyone who might know where the driver is to get in touch with police.
“We are still collecting dash-cam footage, so if you managed to capture the incident or the silver Mondeo driving to or away from the scene, then please pass your footage to police.”
The collision happened at around 9.25pm on Thursday, close to the junction of Manson Avenue.
One worker at a shop on the parade near the scene said: “It’s really sad to hear she’s passed away.
“Obviously your thoughts go out to her poor family.
“This is such a busy road, though I’ve been dreading something like this happening.”
