Store plan for church site
A NEW Heron Foods supermarket and a revamped church hall are set to be created in Brinnington.
The Diocese of Chester, Stockport council and Heron Foods have agreed terms for the sale of the closed church building on Brinnington Road, where a new Heron Foods supermarket will open later in the year.
The money raised from the sale of the plot will be used to redevelop a community facility in Brinnington church hall, located next door.
The building will be used for regular worship and a variety of community events.
The Bishop of Stockport, the Rev Libby Lane, said: “This is a great deal for the community, a real win-win for Brinnington, putting into action St Luke’s motto of ‘Loving God, following Jesus, serving all, renewing lives.’
“Residents will benefit from a new Heron Foods supermarket and also a revamped and extended St Luke’s church facility with space providing regular worship and a variety of events for the wider community.
“We are committed to a partnership with Brinnington, working to be good news for the local community.
“We hope this is a positive development for the local area.”
Church lay leader Brenda Baxendale added: “Although the church building is now closed, we at St Luke’s continue to worship every Sunday at 10am in our new chapel at the rear of the St Luke’s church hall. Everyone is welcome to join us there.”
Coun Sheila Bailey, cabinet member for communities and housing at Stockport council, said: “The new supermarket and an improved community facility will add to the fantastic regeneration projects already happening in Brinnington, enhancing an already great community and place to live.”
