CHILDREN showed their skills at computing and crafts during a day devoted to stretching the minds of gifted and talented pupils at Greenbank Preparatory School.

Almost 50 children from 15 schools gathered at the school in Cheadle Hulme to take part in sessions designed develop to their creative and logical thinking.

Media manager Lyndsey Aizelwood used a BBC education package to create a greenscreen on which the children could place cutout selfies in any location across the globe and make their own animated movies using Lego.

Lyndsey said: “A key characteristic of the gifted and talented mind seems to be how they take a step-by-step approach to each challenge and plan the outcome, start to completion.

“It’s fascinating to see how carefully, creatively and collaboratively they work and how much they enjoy the sense of achievement.”

Greenbank’s head of art, Gaye Chorlton, helped pupils to design, make and decorate their own mini cabinets.

As well as Greenbank pupils, boys and girls from Years 5 and 6 came from schools in Liverpool, Bolton and across Greater Manchester and Cheshire to attend the event.

Greenbank pupil Xavi Switzer, aged 10, who wants to be either an artist or a rugby player in the future, said: “I loved how we were given the freedom to make and design whatever we wanted.”

Greenbank headteacher Janet Lowe, who oversaw the day, added: “The secret is to prompt the young mind, not to preach and to let them discover their own solutions.”
