Darren’s round adds up to win

JOHN Phillips, the Captain of Mellor & Townscliff­e Golf Club welcomed players on to the first tee from 7.15am to start off a great Captain’s Day on and off the course.

The weather was perfect and the course was in great condition for the special day and the players were rewarded with food and drinks at the summerhous­e next to the 13th tee.

Donations to the British Heart Foundation added up to £150.

John really enjoyed his day and his blue jacket came on for the Presentati­on with a full Clubhouse to support him.

The winner was New Mills High School Maths Teacher Darren Lytham who played really well to score 74 - 10 - nett 64!.

In his winner’s speech Darren praised the work of Head Greenkeepe­r and his team for preparing the course so well and he also thanked the ladies who had looked after the golfers at the Summerhous­e.

Prizes were also awarded to John Heginbotha­m who came 2nd with 73 - 7 – 66, David Jones in third spot with 91 - 25 - 66. There was a prize for the longest drive on the 16th won by John Heginbotha­m and for nearest the Pin on the 14th won by Ken Greenhalgh.

After the Prize Presentati­on Mr Captain hosted a Special evening of entertainm­ent and music.

M and T ladies were in medal mode with Pauline Tomlinson winning a cpo on 72 from Paula Ryan and next in were Kate Smith 74 and GA Southworth 75.

It was close in division one of a medal at New Mills with three players locked on 67.

Getting the nod in the cpo was Joe Bowers from Keith Wright and Robert Holden, one less than Jan Kershaw and Ian Harding,

In division two Robert Walsh led in with 63, one clear of Andy Rodgers and John Quate.

A medal for New Mills ladies was won by Anne Brown with 70 from Jane Howard 72 and Celia James 73.

A Captain’s qualifier at Heaton Moor was won by Paul Ward with 66 from Daniel Laffey 67, Ron Eyre 68 and Peter Milner 69.

Moor’s ladies played for the Rosebowl and it was won by a proud Helen Leggatt with her neat 67 taking her two shots clear of Hazel Lappin, AnneMarie Gilbert and Carol Chamberlai­n.

Gatley’s men played over 36 holes for the Captain’s Prize with the early pace being set by Anthony Stevens with a stunning 62 taking him well clear of Ken Finch 67 and Peter Stiles 68.

In round two it was very tight as Peter Johnson won a cpo on 70 from Alex Benner, David Woodworth and Mark Campbell.

But the overall winner and taking the Captain’s Prize was Peter Stiles after a cpo on 139 with Ken Finch, two less than Alex Benner.

Gatley ladies played a singles Stableford and Tracey Gibbon led in with 36 points from Pamela McKean 33 and Vincente Griffiths 32.

Cheadle’s men played their monthly medal and in division one David Robinson was unstoppabl­e with 56 from Peter Davies 59 and Neil Todd 61.

In division two Phil Carter was also in hot form with his clinical 60 seeing him home from club legend Norman Bottomley 62 and Stephen Brown 63.

Cheadle ladies were in 9-hole Stableford action with Louise Wildgoose on top with 18 points from Emma Pike 16.

A Midweek medal at Disley had Will Henderson in control with 65 from Roy Bailey 67 and Dave Woodhead 69.

Captain’s Day at Disley had Ray Timmins out on his own with 65 from Dennis Major, Mark Berry and Mike Hill, all 68.

Disley ladiesalso played for the Captain’s Prize and Elizabeth Critchlow was unstoppabl­e with her sweet 65 taking her home from Maeve Jenkinson 69 and Denise Seddon 70.

The monthly medal at Romiley had the four divisions topped by Harry Doyle 69, Oliver Shore 67, TH Wright 68 and P Drinkwater 68.

Romiley ladies were in Stableford action and Lynn Nuttallled a sring of good scores with 41 points from Janet Wainwright 39, Linda Moore 38 and Irene Barrow 37.

Several of the future stars of Cheshire Golf were given an excellent session of playing and expert advice at Didsbury Golf Club.

Boys under the age of 12 came from across the county to enjoy the excellent facilities at Didsbury Golf Club under the guidance of Cheshire and England coach Peter Barber, the Didsbury profession­al, and Mark Johnson of Styal Golf Cub.

They played a minicompet­ition of six holes which was won by Jack Bent of Stamford Golf Club before being instructed in attitude and course management by Peter and Mark with a few other tips thrown in.

It was then out for a head to head match-play on the Didsbury practice ground involving chipping, putting and bunker play for an experience that will stand them in good stead for their golfing hopes and ambitions.
