Systems check for County boss

- RICHARD PARTINGTON

JIM Gannon will use upcoming friendlies against Football League opposition to trial new tactical formations in readiness for the National; League North season.

The County’s chief’s preferred 4-2-3-1 system has been put to good use in the warm-up matches at Halifax, Stockport Town and Buxton – but Gannon wants his side to be able to switch depending on the opposition.

“We are going to do a lot more work during preseason as we’re trying to compete with lots of fulltime sides who will have that intensity in training and that is a concern when we play the likes of York and Southport so early – we need to make sure our fitness levels and intensity are really good and I’m really pleased with the progress and the fitness scores from the players,” he said. “The other thing we are really mindful of is getting to know our players’ strengths.

“We have started off with a 4-2-3-1 system and we are going to develop, from that platform, other variations. We have players who can play many variations of football and we will need that.

“As we get nearer to the tougher games we will look at other variations that make us more solid and give us a counterattacking threat.

“I want to keep things fairly simple and effective but to make those progressions that the players are comfortable with, that they completely understand and that will make us more effective as we go into the league season.”
