TWINS went toe-totoe in the boxing ring to raise money for charity – while their mum was in the crowd barely able to watch.

Competitive brothers David and Rod McInnes, 33, from Edgeley and Bridgehall, fought it out in a three round bout at a White Collar Fighter event.

In front of family and friends David came out on top, winning in the first round when the referee stepped in to stop the fight.

It has given him brotherly bragging rites since, which he hasn’t been slow to take advantage of.

The dad-of-one said: “I was stronger and better. I’d recommend boxing to anyone, just the training makes you healthier.

“I will do it again, after my son being born it was the second best night of my life. I wanted to win although I think my mum wanted a draw.”

Two of the brothers’ pals, Andy Curran, 35 and Karl Whitehead, 29, both from Adswood, also took part in the event, at Bowler’s, in Trafford Park.

They were part of two teams that comprised of 22 fighters, who together raised close to £8,000 for a variety of worthy causes.

Between them Rod and David raised around £500 that will be given to the Make a Wish Foundation and the Newbridge Centre in Portwood that is run by the Together Trust.

Rod’s late brother-in-law Matthew Swindells, who had Down’s syndrome, used to regularly attend there before he died in 2016.

Of the family’s six other brothers and two sisters, Rod had been the choice to win, coming out top in a pre-fight Facebook poll that had been set up.

He said: “David was better and more hungry. It was a lot of fun, a great experience and I would do it again.

“I didn’t see it as fighting my twin, just fighting another guy so I didn’t have the mind set to hold back.”

Mum Mandy, 54, said: “I watched them coming in but I didn’t really watch the fight as I had my hands over my face.

“In the end there was a gracious loser and a show off winner.

“When it was all over I went over and told them not to do it again.”

The brothers have thanked White Collar Fighter for organising the event, in particular Steve Feney, Ian Goehler, Bilal Remassy Omoboye and Dulcie Cooper, as well as the rest of their teams.
