Anger over pub’s no dogs policy

AN ANIMAL-lover has hit out after she was kicked out of a pub for having a dog with her in its beer garden.

Diane Crosby, 50, says her request for a bowl of water for her elderly pet Buddy before they left was also refused at the Calverts Court, in Stockport town centre.

The incident happened last Wednesday, which was a warm, sunny day, when Dianne had stopped for a drink and sat on the pub’s outside street terrace.

But midway through her ‘swift half’ a member of staff asked her to leave and she thinks the no dogs anywhere on the premises policy, by owners JD Wetherspoon, needs to change.

Dianne, of Hazelwood Road, Hazel Grove, said: “We are supposed to be a nation of animal lovers so they should be more compassionate.

“Most places are dog friendly even if they do food and I’ve never been asked to leave before.

“Buddy was on a lead tied up and outside so he was no threat to anyone. And not giving him a bowl of water on a hot day when he’s clearly old is disgusting.

“Even when I go in the newsagents or the bakers they will bring a bowl of water out for him.

“You can tell he is an old dog just by looking at him, he’s black but going grey, a bit fat and can’t walk that well.”

After leaving the pub, on St Petersgate, Dianne then went to the Bakers Vaults, on Stockport Market Place.

Here staff allowed her to sit with Buddy in the outside area and brought a bowl of water.

Dianne has had Buddy, who is 14, for 12 years since getting him from Harpurhey Dogs Home.

She said: “He is very friendly with children, adults and other dogs, he is very soft and gets on with everyone.

“He goes everywhere with me and when we go to the pub I always keep him outside and it’s never a problem.”

Eddie Gershon, from JD Wetherspoon, said: “We can understand the customer’s frustration, but the dog should not have been on the terrace in the first place as only guide dogs are allowed in our pubs.

“However, on reflection, the dog should have been given water, especially on a hot day.”
