STOCKPORT HARRIERS RACE SERIES

June 6 saw the running of the Boars Head Fell Race, an event that has been in our calendar for a few years now and very popular with Stockport runners.

The 13k slog around Lyme Park seemed less of trudge given the conditions and times were pretty quick.

Out of the race series crew taking part, the leader was James Corden in 52:46, followed by Phil Burns, Ben Snell and Karl Tavini. Heather Corden was the first woman in 58:09, with Faye Waterhouse, Samantha Thomas and Fiona Johnson in tow.

On June 17 we saw the running of the Marple Carnival 10k trail race.

The route was slightly different to last year with less time on road and more on trail. The first part was through Brabyns Park then up on to the canal and through the estate down into Chadkirk. The first couple of miles were mostly uphill followed by a downhill section past the school and down to the river.

A flat section was followed by a steep incline up to the canal before a flat finish over the viaduct and back into the park.

There was a strong turnout from Stockport Harriers with 26 yellow vested champions ready to battle it out for points. It was a warm day with another dry track so a good time was expected. Stockport took all the prizes across the board in a complete whitewash – winning the mens, ladies, and most of the age categories.

Well done to James Barnett on another 100 points as the first Race Series Harrier over the line and it looks pretty competitive among the top three Divisions with Heather Corden again being the leading lady.

The final race in June was the Offerton 10k and it was a surprisingly low turnout, although Stockport Harriers, understandably, were out in force. The race was won by our own Jake Littlehales in an impressive time of 35:09 with Stockport once again taking both the men’s and ladies’ team prizes. The leading lady was Sam Thomas in 44:27. »●The next race in the Race Series is the Helen Fraser Memorial Trophy to take place on Tuesday, August 14, at Woodbank Park. The race is in memory of Helen, who was a well-loved and now dearly missed member of Stockport Harriers and a keen Race Series supporter.
