Captain returns to old home club to stage

- GOLF BY GEOFF GARNETT

TONY Gregory, the Captain of the Society of Manchester Captains, returned to the club where he was captain several years ago to stage his Captain’s Day, which attracted an excellent field of 75 golfers. Just missing out was Barry Swainson, of Reddish Vale, who strained his shoulder getting his golf bag out of his car.

One of the most keenly contested was for the ‘Nearest the Turkey’ prize for those who ball ended up in the hedge at the front of the 18th green.

It was won by Dave Sanders of Reddish Vale.

Top of the shop in the main competition were home pair Phil Massey and Peter Milner, who won a cpo on 43 points to take the Captain’s Cup ahead of another home pair, Ken Lappin and Mike Roberts, with Andy Kershaw (Ellesmere) and Julian Bentley next in with 42. Andy was also celebrating after posting an ace on the 163-yard second hole on his birthday and he provided plenty of whisky at the 19th hole.

Captain Gregory gave his congratulations for all of the winners and a particular mention to all at Heaton Moor who provided a course, food and facilities, which were second to none.

The Wednesday Section medal at Reddish Vale saw Tim Crampton go through a range of emotions

His eight-iron tee shot on the154-yard par three fourth kicked off the left bank and into the hole for an ace to set up a terrific round and he also won half the ‘Twos’ pot for a single stroke.
