European Open at Reddish Vale

REDDISH Vale Golf club were proud hosts as they staged a qualifying round for the prestigiou­s 26th Junior European Junior Open on their renowned Alister MacKenzie course.

The competitio­n has qualifying rounds all over the UK as well as in Europe including countries such as Russia, Sweden, Iceland and Germany.

The eventual qualifiers will enjoy playing the Alcaidesa GC in Southern Spain over the Heathland and Links courses later in the year. The event is open to junior boys u17 and girls u16 and the final will see over 100 boys and 35-40 girls in action and will be featured on the Sky Sports golf channels.

Previous finalists have been Luke Donald, Justin Rose and Nick Dougherty Georgia Hall and local star Bronte Law from Bramhall GC, twice a winner of the girls final.

Winning through to the final were Jack Bryan (Bolton Old Links) with the two-handicappe­r, who is a regular player for Lancashire Boys, posting a gross round of 74 which included two lost balls.

Joining Jack in the final in Spain will be Vale’s young star Daniel Myers, the son of Vale pro Andrew Myers, with a gross 87 and Abergele GC’s Lea-Anne Bramwell who qualified for her fourth final with a gross 84.

There was also a special nett prize for Reddish Vale’s Luke Parkinson for his 92-28=64 card.

Tournament director Fred Moghadam has organised the event since its inception and he was delighted with the quality of the course and warm welcome and excellent organisati­on by Reddish Vale GC.

Vale is one of 32 courses in the UK that host the qualifying rounds and they did a great job at their first staging of the competitio­n and for more details about the competitio­n check out the website www.golforgani­ser.com.

AVRO’s men played a midweek Stableford and in a close finish Peter Meddows won a cpo on 34 points from Kevin Barker and hot on their heels with 33 were Derek Ellershaw, Derek Bell and Michael Thornber.

A Seniors’ medal at Cheadle had division one led in by Ian Wightman with 64, well clear of Lee Childs 68 and Jan Elliott 69.

Division two honours went to Nigel Day who went clickety click to finish clear of Keith Evans 68 and Frederick Goodwin 69.

Cheadle ladies played for the secretary’s prize and Jayne Warren was top of the shop with 38 points from Beverley VanRoss 36 and Brenda Peak 35.

The Autumn Meeting for Disley’s men saw them play a medal for the Norris Cup and it was won by Neil O’Brien with 65, one less than Steve Kewley and Tony Jackson.

Disley ladies played a singles Stableford and Linda McCay was first past the post with 35 points from Leigh Duffy 34 and Joan Sandrey and Jenny Penson, both 33.

The Club Trophy at Gatley was won by Antony Finch with 66, two less than Richard Rood, Alex Benner and Matthew Milnes.

David Sanders was unstoppabl­e at Heaton Moor as their men played for the Mauldeth Trophy posting 61 to finish ahead of Steven Prinn 64 and Jon Beckett 66.

The Spellman Trophy at Heaton Moor was won by Anthony Spellman who was delighted to receive the trophy presented to the club in the memory of his father.

It needed a cpo on 67 to see soccer legend Anthony shake off Stan Wilson with Danny Procter, Paul Hesford and Paul Stonehouse hot on their heels with 68.

Moor’s ladies were in medal mode with Lyndsay Alexander in prime form with 66 seeing her well clear of Margaret Arnison 69 and Naheed Farooq 70.

A singles Stableford for Mellor and Townscliff­e ladies needed a cpo on 39 points to see Paul Ryan home from Kay Conway, three more than Louise Davenport, Eileen Lewis and Alison Davies.

M and T staged a Junior Derbyshire and Cheshire medal and Mackenzie Yates from Stamford GC won a cpo on 66 form M and T and Cheshire star Lauren Jones.

A Stableford for M and T’s men saw PA Welsh top division one with 41 points from Stuart Jones 38 and in division two Thomas Statham was the main man with 42 points from Thomas Challinor 40.

The Rigby Trophy at New Mills was won by Alex Mackenzie with 42 points and hot on his heels with 41 were Stephen Browne, Gary Yates and Ian Berrisford.

New Mills ladies were also in trophy action playing a medal for the Wilson Bowl and in a tight finish Anne Brown won a cpo on 67 from Marie-Anne McGibbon, one less than Jane Gee and Margaret Palmer.

The Jubilee Trophy at Romiley was won by V Walker with 40 points, three more than Garry Hall and A Rexstraw.

The familiar name of Hilary Craven led in a Stableofrd for Romiley ladies as she posted 36 points to finish ahead of Heather Denton 33, Joan Mellor 32 and Angela Slate 31.

The Manchester and District Golf Alliance, the biggest in the country, teed off its new winter season in idyllic conditions at Romiley Golf Club to the delight of the new Alliance Captain Dave Green the Dukinfield Golf Club profession­al with the coveted Robert Wax Trophy at stake.

The superb weather and well conditione­d course inspired a full field of players to produce a string of hot scores.

But undoubtedl­y the star of the day was Alliance stalwart Craig Corrigan who posted a scorching round of 47 points to romp to victory in the individual pro section and finish well clear of Alistair Waddell (Chorlton) 40 and Jamie Howarth (Davenport) and Mark Hancock (Stand), both 38.

Craig’s huge points haul could be a record score for the Alliance and their archivists are scouring their records to see if he has set a new mark. Craig also topped the pro am section partnering Mark Riley (Leigh) to 49 points ahead of Andy Palmer and Gary Wood (Chorley) who won a cpo on 45 from Jamie Howarth and Mike Lamb (Bramhall).

Andy Palmer and Gary Wood were the winners of the Robert Wax Trophy as the players with the highest score on the day have to be from the same golf club and they were presented with the trophy by Alliance President John Dowd.

There were also convincing winners in the am am section with sponsor Paul Dalby’s guests Phil Vokes (Wilmslow) and Chris Cyprus (Didsbury) cruising to victory with 46 points, four more than Mark Window (Styal) and Gary Boott (Denton) who won a cpo from John Kilner and Terry O’Mara (Ellesmere).
