Harriers excel in Sheffield relays

ANOTHER terrific day for Stockport Harriers at the Northern Athletics Cross Country Relays at a very warm and firm Graves Park, Sheffield.

There were lots of terrific team performanc­es across all the junior age groups.

It was fantastic to see some new faces competing too, some of them at their first cross country event.

The age groups competing were U11 up to U17 and Stockport fielded teams across most of the ages.

The gauntlet was laid by the U11 Girls team made up of Ella Buckley, Tess Longmate and Niamh Mackintosh who finished an impressive 6th team out of 30.

Ella also managed to run the 8th fastest leg out of all 92 runners.

Next up were the U13 Girls ‘A’ team, made up of Darcy Breen, Sophie Ellwood and Freya Murdoch.

The girls were on usual top form and Sophie and Freya led the race from the second leg to storm to victory and take home Gold medals for the team.

Freya also ran the second fastest leg of the day. The U13 Girls ‘B’ team with Saffron Meade, Emma Wooddoyle and Daniela Graham Marti also managed a respectabl­e 21st place out of 40 teams.

We also fielded an incomplete ‘C’ team with Ellena Walker and Holly Stewart.

Esther Hulley, Isabel Brundrett and Daisy Keigher made up the U15 Girls ‘A’ team who placed 27th overall.

The U15 Girls ‘B’ team consisting of Lauren Dewsbury, Emily Varty and Poppy took 37th place.

The U17 Girls also had a great run with Natasha Moore, Ellie Parkman and Alice Davies finishing in 15th place.

The U13 Boys had a tough race and Harry Ahearn, Dean Thornhill and William Dewsbury battled it out for 34th place.

Taking the Bronze in the U15 Boys race were ‘A’ team Thomas Manton, Harry Ellwood and Finley Mayoh after a fantastic race, finishing only 20 seconds behind the leaders, Vale Royal Athletics club.

The ‘B’ team with Alex Macfarlane, Cameron Murdoch and Jack Catterall also finished in 22nd.

The last race of the day was the U17 Boys who all finished in 7th place on their individual legs meaning that Ben Batho, Edward Corden and Flynn Walsh came 7th out of 21 complete teams and six incomplete teams.

Jacob Wooddoyle ran solo as the incomplete ‘B’ team and finished a fantastic 23rd place on his leg.
