Dominant Harriers a hit in Relays

- ATHLETICS SOFIA TAVINI

THE senior members of Stockport Harriers eagerly took part in the University of Manchester Relays on the weekend.

With their yellow Stockport Bibs they dominated yet another race, with nearly 40 of the club’s athletes taking part.

There, athletes ran a fast and flat threekilometre loop at Kenworthy Woods filled with dozens of sharp and narrow bends.

As if the cold temperatures weren’t enough, the wind also decided to pipe up making it impossible not to run in a coat and leggings.

However, the members sacrificed the luxury of keeping warm in the club tent and defied the freezing conditions.

The mixed teams consisting of six legs set off first and took on the winding course.

To make the top three spots for Stockport were the A team (Andy Nixon, Phil Burns, James Corden, Nathan Mayoh, Karl Taylor and Iain Mudoch).

Overall, they came 50th with a time of 01:03:44.

Shortly after the Stockport B team (Steve Brown, Mathew Townley, Paul Carrington, Andy Carpenter, Mike Shaw and Rob Cawley) crossed the finish line taking 77th place with a time of 01:11:14.

Finally, the third Stockport to come whizzing through the line was Team C, with a time of 01:16:01 and placing 91st (Dave Hulley, Adrian Nutter, Paul Haines, George Walker, Pete Sinclair and Mark Byrom)

The first three Stockport teams to finish were Stockport Harriers Team A (Louise Rudd, Jayne Lawton and Ruth Sinclair) crossing the line at 33:57 and overall snatching 21st place.

Louise also took 10th fastest lap of the day.

This was shortly followed by our Team B (Clara Jarvis, Sofia Tavini and Imogen Nutter) finishing at 36:40 and taking 44th place.

Next up to finish was our Stockport Harriers Team D (Jill Tavini, Jane Mulryan and Sophie Seigner) placing overall 63rd with a time of 39:45.

At the end of it all, we had some very dedicated harriers racing two legs on different teams.

They were obviously keen on getting their mileage up, although the number of delicious treats provided may have contradicted the point of exercise!

Across the weekend Stockport Harriers Kelly Crickmore won V40 womens title at the Frankfurt Marathon with over 10,000 runners participating in this race, Kelly also ran a PB of 02:42:34 and placing 29th overall woman

Two more of the club’s dedicated runners, Andy Titley and Alison Duckworth, took on the Snowdonia Marathon.

Both managed to finish under four hours with Andy crossing the line with an astonishing time of 3:57:38, shortly followed by Alison with 03:57:39, claiming 503rd position.
