Shopper’s anger at ‘danger’ wine crate displays in store

- REBECCA DAY

AMORRISONS’ customer has expressed his outraged at two ‘dangerous’ wine crate displays in a Stockport store, saying they could have killed a small child.

David Clare said the boxes in the Reddish branch on Reddish Road were stacked like a ‘house of cards’, ready to be toppled over.

A spokeswoman for Morrisons said they tried to build an ‘interesting display’ for customers, but the displays had since been dismantled and rebuilt.

The 70-year-old was out shopping with his wife Sandra on Tuesday when he spotted the fivetier structures in the middle of the aisle, which he said reached to his shoulder.

Retired David, who worked in electrical inspection, said the wine towers were wider at the top than at the bottom, ‘like a traffic cone upside down’, meaning they were unstable.

Recalling his trip to the store, he said: “My wife is unsteady on her feet. She uses a stick. We got down that end of the shop. I said ‘my god, keep away from that’.

If somebody walked up and took one of the crates off, the whole lot would’ve come down.

“It’s like a house of cards. It was about five foot, above my shoulder.

“It would’ve killed a young child to be honest with you.”

David said he emailed customer services after he left the store to share his concerns, but they replied saying there was nothing wrong with it.

“They said it was built to health and safety guidelines. I didn’t believe what I was hearing. I just can’t fathom it at all, they’ve been very blasé about it”, he said.

David said a risk assessment should’ve been carried out before the wine towers were erected, to avoid any risk of injury.

“They have said ‘nobody got hurt’, but health and safety doesn’t work in that way,” he said.

A Morrisons’ spokeswoman said: “Our colleagues had tried to build an interesting display for our customers. Yesterday [Sunday, February 3], they dismantled and rebuilt the display whilst the store was closed.”
