Bailey can have big impact on all fronts

GLEN Chapple believes Tom Bailey will always carry a threat at county and international level.

The Lancashire seam bowler made his England Lions debut last week in the one-wicket win against India A.

Bailey, who was the leading wicket-taker in Division One of the Specsavers County Championship last season, claimed two wickets and was at the crease at the end as the Lions secured victory.

The Red Rose ace, who was presented with his Lions cap by Emirates Old Trafford team-mate and good pal Alex Davies, is now preparing for two four-day ‘Tests’ against the same opposition.

After years of niggling injuries, last season was a breakthrough one for the 27-year-old as he claimed 64 Championship wickets at the age of just 19.

And it earned him a contract extension at Lancashire, which will keep him at the club until at least 2021.

Head coach Chapple, himself a top-class pace bowler, is now hoping Bailey can keep fit and be the Red Rose spearhead as they bid to win instant promotion back to Division One after last year’s relegation.

“It is as simple as staying fit,” said Chapple when asked what made the difference for Bailey last season. “I was expecting him to have a great season the year before, he had worked really hard and he is skilful, he has good control of his seam and length.

“He is always economical and at 6ft 4ins he is always carrying a threat. He has got a solid game and, hopefully, his fitness continues to hold up because he is an exciting bowler.”

Another bowler Chapple is hoping stays fit it Saqib Mahmood.

The 21-year-old quick had a frustrating 2018 as a series of injuries kept him off the pitch.

However, he continues to be picked for the England Lions when fit, and now Chapple is keen to get him on the field for the Red Rose.

“Saq is exciting, he is fast,” Chapple said.

“He is desperate to show people what he can do.

“In effect, he is like having a new signing next year.”
