Girl bids to win top song prize
ASCHOOLGIRL starlet is celebrating reaching the latter stages of a prestigious music competition.
Emilia Scarlett, from Longsight Lane, Cheadle Hulme, has reached the Open Mic UK semi-finals – a premier competition for unsigned acts.
The Cheadle Hulme High School pupil, 15, impressed the judges with one of her own songs at an audition in the regional heats at Salford University on October 6.
Emilia, whose real name is Millie Fawcett, will now compete against a handful of other semifinalists from across the region in the North of England and Scotland final on November 16.
Speaking after receiving the news, the former Gatley Primary School pupil said: “I was really nervous about entering a national competition, as I’ve never done anything like this before.
“Singing in front of the industry judges and a live studio audience was an experience I’ll never forget.
“When I found out I was through to the semifinals I couldn’t believe it.”
Millie, whose mum and dad are Julia and Neil, has a brother Tom, 24, and has enjoyed singing and writing her own songs from a young age.
She was encouraged by her singing teacher at Cheadle Hulme High, Ms Lundberg, to enter the competition.
Mum Julia said they are very proud of her achievements.
She said: “It’s dead exciting and we were so proud to be there to see her get through. She plays the piano and she writes all her own songs.
“She has done lots of stuff at school but the first thing she has done outside school.
“It was a big stage for her for the first time with a live audience and judges, but she seemed as cool as a cucumber.”
Open Mic UK is a national music competition that attracts more than 10,000 people. All types of singers, singer/ songwriters, rappers and vocal groups are eligible to audition.
The aim is to discover and develop acts that have the ability to become professional recording artists.
