Gun and £5,000 cash found after 70mph chase

-

OFFICERS from an elite GMP unit recovered a stolen Audi, a loaded gun and £5,000-worth of cash and drugs following a 70mph chase.

The force’s Tactical Vehicle Intercept Unit started to pursue a white Audi A3, believed to have been stolen in a burglary in Stockport last month, which reached speeds of 70 mph.

The short chase took place around the Moss Side and Hulme area of Manchester just after 10.30pm on Sunday (October 13).

A tyre-piercing stinger device was deployed and the vehicle was abandoned near Bold Street, Hulme.

Two officers from the TVIU gave chase on foot and took down a suspect. A small amount of ammunition was recovered during the arrest.

Using a police dog, officers retraced the route the suspect fled and found a pistol, which was loaded. It was recovered on grassland near a block of flats.

About £5,000 in cash and drugs were also recovered.

The drugs are suspected to be cocaine and heroin, but forensic analysis is yet to take place.

A 20-year-old man was arrested on suspicion of possession of a firearm and possession of class A drugs with intent to supply.

Chief Inspector John Harris, of GMP’s City of Manchester Division, said: “Thanks to the dedication and professionalism of our officers, we have brought a suspected stolen vehicle safely to a halt and recovered an illegal firearm.

“This weapon and proceeds from the sale of the drugs also recovered would doubtless have been used to further other criminality.

“Their capture not only makes our streets safer, but will aid further investigations as we continue to target those who seek to profit from crime.

“If you suspect someone of owning an illegal firearm or being involved in drug dealing, contact police immediately. Your actions may help to save someone’s life.”
