STOCKPORT’S winter bowlers are facing a crisis this campaign on the main venue at Love Lane.

The hardy band have been handed over a green in appalling condition not fit to play on.

This is the second winter consecutiv­ely the green has been poorly prepared for the several groups that use the venue. The Main Sunday winter sweep has not seen a bowl sent in anger because of the rising cost of winter permits and the state of the green.

The round robin social games are now forced to take place on a green usually used in the summer rather than Love Lane itself. The council are blaming a very hot summer on the state of the green but those scorching conditions were some fifteen months ago now.

The winter permit is also a huge bone of contention for the organisers of the Sunday morning events. Bowlers as far away as Cumbria have been known to attend but at this moment the green has fallen silent of play.

The charge of £27.55 for play on a green well below standard is extortiona­te and the council will not provide separate winter play passes.

Many bowlers on Sundays play on a Ad Hoc basis and are being priced out of attending and using the green for which it is intended.

The green itself missed out on fencing but is regularly used and abused by youngsters playing football and golf on them.

The permit is a 12 month pass only but most the winter fraternity would not use it in the summer.
